Embroidery is one of the oldest methods of embellishing clothing and fabric; once laboriously done by hand is now fully computerized with modern technology. Embroidery is a fantastic way to add design elements to a garment or fabric item and is especially well suited for heavy textured clothing such as denim and corduroy or items with lots of seams and dimension like jackets and hats.

Embroidery really tests the rigidity of the fabric due to the tension the embroidered design puts on it. We do not normally suggest embroidering anything than the smallest and simplest designs on light fabric like that of a t-shirt. Large fills or complex designs may put too much stress on lightweight fabrics causing them to pucker or tear.
Heavier sweatshirt or jacket materials like thick cotton or canvas allows for larger, more complex designs to be embroidered without compromising the way the fabric lays. While you may be able to embroider larger designs, keep in mind that dense fills in your embroidery my result in stiff patches that affect the way your garments drapes and may become uncomfortable to wear against bare skin.
Due to the difficulty of printing on such items, hats and beanies are the more frequently embroidered items. While most manufactured garments are embroidered before construction, some hats and beanies still allow for a lot of options when it comes to decoration. The easiest being foam trucker hats or unstructured baseball "dad" caps. Most of these will allow for a 2" tall by up to a 5" wide embroidery.
